Purported as the most aggressive, tenacious and exciting of North American quarries, bass are one of the most sought after chase of fishers.
The term "bass" includes a wide-range of species and specimen of fish and is geographically dependent, especially in North America. Worldwide, the term bass can include a host of both salt water and freshwater varieties.
Bass fishing generally refers specifically to "black bass" fishing. Black bass, a variety of freshwater fish, is considered a member of the sunfish family, including blue gills and crappies. Black bass includes both largemouth bass and small mouth bass, Kentucky bass or spotted bass, and Guadalupe bass to name a few. Members of the black bass family can be found in most freshwater bodies throughout Canada and all points of the United States. Technique and style for bass fishing can vary dramatically based on location, environment, time of year, and species. Bass is a popular target for both traditional and fly fishermen.
As a particular style of fishing, bass fishing has been a favorite in the United States and Canada since the mid to late 18th century. Bass fishing as a sport has spread throughout the world and is growing more popular in Australia, Cuba, South Africa and parts of Europe.
Bass fishing in the United States has grown into a multi-million dollar-a-year industry. Although no special equipment is required to fish bass, per se, bass fishing specific boats, rods, line, lures, and sonar flood the market. In addition to hardware, a plenitude of books, magazines, videos, television programs and websites are dedicated to bass fishing.
Although popular as a leisure recreational activity, bass fishing has also developed into a career for some anglers. The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) sponsors national and state-wide divisional tournaments and bass fishing circuits throughout the United States.
Notable professional bass fishermen such as Scott Rook , Mike Iaconelli, and Peter Thliveros, regularly compete in tournaments throughout the United States. Most recently, over 100 pro bass anglers competed in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series. This newly created tournament offered fishers the opportunity to net part of a total cash pot of approximately $11.2 million, excluding lucrative sponsorship contracts.
