Fishing Nets: Types, Mending And Making

There are several kinds of fishing nets meant to help capture different types of fish. Fishing nets may not be mandatory for your fishing trip, but can often make the catch much easier. They are there for convenience and can often mean the difference between a catch and a loss.

Landing Net
The landing net can be very helpful to a fisherman.  A landing net is a long, bag-shaped net meant to help bring the fish in from the water. When there is a huge fish fighting for its life on the end of the line, the landing net is there to make sure the fish makes it into the boat. This net may help in many ways.

Once the fish is out of the water, all the weight is on the fisherman and fishing pole. There is nothing else supporting the weight of the fish anymore.  Your arms can be very tired after fighting it up to the surface. A landing net will save you energy otherwise spent trying to hold that fish out of the water so it can't get away.

It also serves as a form of security.  Many times a fish will use the surface as an advantage to flip itself off the hook and escape.  If it is in a landing net, there is nowhere for it to go. It can also ensure control over the fish once it is out of the water. As many fish will try to fight, even when hanging in the air, they basically become an angry, unstable pendulum floating in front of you. This could be a big problem when bringing in fish with stingers. You don't want to be reaching for the end of your line to suddenly see a catfish jerk its dorsal fin into your arm.

Commercial Nets
These are bigger fishing nets, mostly used by commercial fisherman trying to catch many of fish in one scoop. These nets may be used in freshwater or saltwater using different ways to catch different fish.

Gill Net
These fishing nets are designed to catch fish by their gills. The gill net is basically formed into a wall, stabilized in the water by a series of floats and weights. Fish that are too big to fit through the net will catch their gills on it as they try to back out.

Trap Net
Trap nets are a more intricate design of fishing nets. They are made up of a series of nets formed by floats, weights and frames leading to an enclosure called the heart. Following this area, the fish are then lead through a tunnel to the pot where they are then trapped.

Salmon Net
Meant for capturing salmon, these fishing nets are attached to a series of bright orange buoys that float on the surface.

Fishing can be quite a different experience when using fishing nets. In some cases, fisherman will save themselves money by making fishing nets. Making or mending fishing nets can be a cheap and easy alternative to buying new ones, but it may mean the loss of your catch if they are poorly made. There are several procedures in making fishing nets on your own, so be sure to follow instructions correctly for an effective fishing net.
